BHT’s Whitehawk Inn is a friendly community centre providing a range of courses, services and support.
One of the services that the Whitehawk Inn offers is 3 month internships. I spoke with Gerry (a BHT resident) about his experience as Marketing and Events Coordinator Intern.
“I found out about the Routes Internship at the BHT Ready For Work event. I went there in order to approach Murray about doing an internship for BHT. Murray was not at that event but whilst there I met Louise who is the intern coordinator at the Whitehawk Inn. After hearing about the internship position I decided I would apply and I got the post. I liked the fact that the role is both structured and flexible. It’s great for building confidence back and for creating a routine.
The big attraction for me was to connect with the BHT ‘family’ and raising the profile of the Whitehawk Inn both within BHT services and also in the community.
I have discovered that there is a lot more to the Whitehawk Inn than I realised and so it’s been quite easy to promote what goes on here. The environment here is very non pressurised whether you are just coming here to engage in one of the games clubs or do an academic or creative course. The ethos of the place across the board is to go at the learners pace. This has also been the case with my internship. They have been brilliantly supportive and helpful and have gone at my pace. There has also been opportunity for training within the internship, all paid for by BHT.
One thing that I said in my interview for the role was that I wanted to make a contribution back to society and the internship has very much provided me with the opportunity to do so.”
