Hidden in Upper Bedford St, Kemptown, Brighton, is a fast growing table tennis club.
Founded by Tim Holtam and Harry Mc Carney in 2007, it welcomes and encourages all. The club won the Equality award in 2006 and prides itself on welcoming refugees, asylum seekers, beginners and keen players alike. Currently they have eight adult teams and juniors.
I spoke to table tennis coach Wen Wei at BHT’s London road office when he was offering taster coaching sessions in the reception area. Wen is not only a professional in his home country of China, but also was a champ here in 2015-2016. He is a hands-on coach. Also coaching at the club is Pedro, who is Portuguese. He is always there to encourage players at this diverse venue.
